Outstanding Student of the Year Award - Criteria

Deadline:

To be considered for the 2010 Outstanding Student of the Year Award, students must submit documentation (see below) by November 5, 2010. Please email all documents to m-castl@umich.edu. Contact Amanda Dallaire at dallaire@umich.edu if you have any questions.

Eligibility:

1. Graduate or undergraduate student at a college or university (not necessarily U-M), who is a US citizen. Individuals who have already graduated and who meet other selection criteria are also eligible for the award.
2. Must have a cumulative GPA of B or better.
3. Must have received financial support from M-CASTL within the preceding year.
4. Cannot be a past recipient of the student of the year award.
5. Must be available to attend the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) Awards Banquet at the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington, DC (tentatively scheduled for January 22, 2011).

Criteria:

Selection will be based on accomplishments in three areas:
1. Research and Technical Merit
2. Academic Performance
3. Professionalism and Leadership

These criteria will be assessed by M-CASTL’s Education Subcommittee based upon the documents provided by the student and faculty supporter, as well as the student presentation (see below for details). All three areas should be considered equally. Research and technical merit includes involvement in research projects or other technical activities. Academic performance is based upon courses attempted and grades attained. Evidence of professionalism and leadership can be in the form of presentations at professional society meetings and symposia, and leadership/involvement in student or professional activities.

Each student will submit the following:

1. Grades from his/her current program.
2. A curriculum vitae (including the following topic areas as appropriate: education; work experience; publications: including peer reviewed journal articles, conference articles, abstracts, technical reports, and book chapters; presentations; role in funded research projects; awards; professional memberships; other).
3. Faculty assessment (see attached form; submitted directly from faculty to m-castl@umich.edu).
4. Presentation of about 10 minutes (related to the three areas listed as “criteria” above) and Q&A with the M-CASTL Education Subcommittee.

The Student of the Year Award recipient will receive the following:

1. $1,000
2. Cost of attendance (including travel, lodging, and registration fees) at TRB
3. Certificate from the US Department of Transportation
